Ausgangsort für das gemeinsame Recherche- und Ausstellungs-projekt Groundwork ist Loki Schmidts „Urwald“ am Brahmsee in Schleswig-Holstein: Seit 1976 entwickelt sich auf dem ehemals landwirtschaftlich genutzten Areal ein Wald, der gänzlich sich selbst überlassen wurde. Loki Schmidt hatte 1986 dieses 7,5 Hektar große Grundstück erworben; heute gehört es zum&#38;nbsp;Stiftungsland der Loki Schmidt Stiftung. Das Experiment, das die Naturschützerin hier durchführte, entspricht ganz dem mittler-weile weltweit verstärkt angewandtem und erfolgreichen Kon-zept des Rewilding: eine Form der ökologischen Renaturierung, die darauf abzielt, die Biodiversität zu erhöhen und natürliche Prozesse wiederherzustellen – mit so wenig menschlicher Intervention wie möglich.&#38;nbsp;
Wie produziert man Arbeiten für eine Ausstellung, wenn das eigentliche Thema das Nichts-Tun, die Zurückhaltung, das Sein- und Loslassen ist? Wie erzählt man über einen Wald, den man nicht erkunden kann? Dessen einzig gangbaren Linie die des Waldpfads von etwa 300 Metern Länge ist? Es gilt geduldig zu sein, den Blick zu schärfen, das Tempo zu drosseln – und die Widersprüchlichkeiten auszuhalten. Groundwork ist ein Experiment ähnlich dem der Rewilding Idee: Es gibt kein formuliertes Ziel, keine richtigen, keine falschen Ergebnisse. Es ist vielmehr eine Grundlagenarbeit, eine Arbeit der Nachlässigkeit, die geleistet wird, um darauf aufzubauen.

When I moved into my studio in 2019 I was told that the building, probably from the 60ies in an industrial area of Hamburg and had once been a custom office, would be torn down soon to build a new living and shopping area. The room itself was small, squared and had a kind of platform at the two windows where I imagine the clerk sitting at their desk. The floor was a yellowish-brown linoleum and apart from that the room was empty when I moved in. In this dusty and frumpy atmosphere I noticed little traces in the room, leftovers, stories from whom might have worked here. Scratches along the wall, probably from an office chair scrubbing. Holes from nails, at some places still screws in the wall. Crumbling plaster at the ceiling.This was the starting point of the series 'office figures'. I started to fill the space with geometric shapes, stellar constellations, softened corners – and continued until I had to move out the following year. All materials used for these interventions in the room are discarded and found objects.

Impermanent Sculptures (of Indestructible Objects)

	'Impermanent Sculptures (of Indestructible Objects)' belongs to a strongly process based body of work developed within various media like sculpture, photography, writing, performance and installation, dealing with the topics of plastic and pollution, consumerism and value. Since the act of walking has always been a working method of mine and one stumbles over trash constantly, I created a frame of rules for me to follow.

	1. Collect garbage and found objects.2. React as immediately and spontaneously as possible on site.3. Create a sculpture within a limited time frame.4. Take a photograph, showing a short moment of balance and fragility.The title refers both to the ephemeral aspect of the sculptures and to the time the garbage takes to decompose.

Exercise&#38;nbsp;
to travel in thoughts

(or to write a text about writing a text about the experience of encountering an oak tree)

I sit in the kitchen
preparing myself to travel in thoughts
from my red table
to the oak tree 
in the very right corner of the garden 
that surrounds the house I currently live in. 

I have observed the oak many times from this spot
through the wide window front of the kitchen.
At various times of the day
in various light conditions.
Behind the tree I can see a sunburnt field 
and behind that the water at the horizon.

To be honest, I kept postponing my encounter with it, 
respectfully, or rather doubtfully, how to approach an oak 
a sacred tree 
connected to legends, stories and myths
used and misused for representation of men.

But those are merely excuses –
so now, in the morning of this early autumn day
my travel in thoughts begins. 

I imagine 
getting up from my chair, 
stepping out of the door onto the lawn.
I would feel the cold, fresh air 
hear birds and the wind.

I would look to the tree in the corner of the garden 
Who is not alone:
It is last in a row next to another oak, a maple tree, two beeches, another oak tree. 
I would walk slightly uphill 
Approximately fifty small steps
Through grass, moss, fallen leaves and acorns. 

And I know, I would feel somewhat uneasy
So close to the trunk
Under those wide branches
and their dark, cool and moist environment. 

I would realise that not only the lower part is covered by flowering ivy
But also that it is crawling high up to the top. I would remember that once I had read that ivy partners up with trees
in providing extra food and shelter for animals. 

I would wonder about who had planted the oak and when? 
Even if I wanted to I would not be able to embrace the trunk,neither could I estimate the height or age of the tree.

I would hear a vibrant humming 
of busy insects, and smell something sweet.
Every now and then an acorn would fall down,
and I would be startled for a moment.

I would notice that the dark green leaves are very still –
And after a while,
I would go back to my desk and write down 
my experience of the encounter with an oak tree.

Having lived a nomadic life without a permanent residence  for many years, this body of work became a personal research about land, place and sense of belonging, describing my exploration, perception and interpretation of landscape, strongly led by intuition, memory and my emotional state. The result can be described as a slow, meditative walk itself, demonstrating my personal connection and awareness to a non-specific place.&#38;nbsp;
